Compost VS Peat

I have allways started my seeds in a 50/50 mix of vermiculite and peat. This year I had many extra tomatoe seeds and planted them in a flat of 50/50 vermiculite/compost. Next year I will be planting all my seeds in the compost mix.

John, that is quite interesting. I wonder why everyone says that seed starting mix is better? You’ve got me wondering now…

  2. Good to know, John. Do you sterilize the compost first, to help prevent damping off?

EG, probably influenced by people trying to sell it. For a long time farmers and gardeners were starting there own plants before they found money in those bogs.

Granny, I use to pasteurize in a microwave that I got at a yard sale for $5. However, as of late, I just leave the GH fan on 24/7 it seams to do the trick.
